Travel Information

The conference will be held in Peabody Hall on Saturday and Sunday.

Because parking on campus can be difficult, we strongly recommend staying at the Hampton Inn or Holiday Inn Express. These two hotels offer free door-to-door shuttles to and from our conference sites. Triangle Transit Authority, our regional bus service, provides evening service to popular local destinations.

Flying

Conference participants flying to the conference should use Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU).

Getting to the Hotels

A comprehensive list of ground transportation to and from RDU Airport, including cost estimates, bus schedules, and transportation contact numbers, can be found at http://rdu.com/groundtrans/groundtrans.htm.

SCALE’s Conference Hotel Information page includes addresses for each hotel. Google Maps can provide personalized driving directions.

To take the bus from RDU airport to the Hampton Inn or Holiday Inn Express, take the TTA Airport Shuttle (bus 747) from the airport to the TTA bus center in RTP (less than a 10 minute ride). Then, from the RTP bus center, take route 403 or 413 to the stop at Hwy 54 and Farrington Rd. (Ask the driver to tell you when to get off; this stop is after the Woodcroft Pkwy/Southpoint Mall stops but before the South Road @ Student Union stop.) This is about a 20-25 minute bus ride. The Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express are both about a 2-minute walk from there (the hotels are next to one another on Farrington Road, just past the Shell station). This trip from the airport, although it will take longer than a taxi, costs only $2.00 per person each way.

Getting to the Conference

We have arranged with the Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express to have free shuttles running from the hotel parking lot to our conference site. We strongly recommend that conference participants take advantage of this service.

The conference will be held in Peabody Hall on Saturday and Sunday. Suggested places to park:

  • Campus parking is much more open on Saturday and Sunday, since most parking permits do not apply on weekends. Pay attention to the signs at the entrance to each parking lot (some are restricted on weekends) and to any signs posted in front of individual spaces (some service (P) or disability parking is restricted 24 hours a day/7 days a week), as your vehicle may be ticketed or towed if in violation.
  • Swain Visitor Lot located on Cameron Avenue just east of the intersection with South Columbia Street; $1/hour. This lot is across the street from Peabody Hall.
  • We also suggest parking in Bynum Circle (and the small parking lots off of it) or on Emerson or Lenoir Drives.
  • Morehead Planetarium visitor lot on Franklin Street; $1/hour.
  • Three parking lots/decks on East Rosemary Street between North Columbia Street and Henderson Street, rates vary from $1.30/hour to $6 all day.

To get personalized driving directions to Peabody Hall on a map website (such as Google Maps), use the intersection of Cameron Avenue & S Columbia St, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.
