AmeriCorps

The NC LiteracyCorps Project is a cohort of AmeriCorps members working to increase the capacity and direct service impact of North Carolina's campus and community-based literacy programs. Currently the NC LiteracyCorps has 19 full-time, 4 half-time, and 15 minimum-time AmeriCorps members on college campuses and community sites across the state. Our priority service areas include providing skills development training such as adult basic education (ABE), general educational development (GED), and English to speakers of other languages (ESOL) to economically disadvantaged adults, recruiting, training and supporting volunteer literacy tutors, and increasing literacy skills in K-12 students.

The Host Service Site application period is now open for the 2012-2013 North Carolina LiteracyCorps AmeriCorps program! The service year for North Carolina LiteracyCorps members runs from August 1, 2012--July 31, 2013. AmeriCorps is a national service program that engages Americans of all ages and backgrounds in community and national service, and the North Carolina LiteracyCorps AmeriCorps program is a cohort of 38 members who are placed at community- and campus-based literacy program across North Carolina. North Carolina LiteracyCorps members carry out their year of service by working to increase literacy levels of both young people in grades K-12, and through working to improve the literacy rates of adults. Additionally, North Carolina LiteracyCorps members recruit other people to serve as volunteers and further the goals of increased literacy rates of youth and adults in their communities.

The 2012-2013 Host Service Site application is due by 5pm, January 31, 2012 (via email to lwalter@email.unc.edu), and you must also include a Service Description (not "Job," "Work" or "Employment" description) for each member slot you are requesting, as well as a proposed service schedule for each member slot you are requesting. Please note that having had a North Carolina LiteracyCorps member placed at your agency/organization/school before does not automatically guarantee placement of a member(s), nor placement of the same number of member(s), for the 2012-2013 service year.

When completing the application, please answer every question completely; incomplete applications will not be considered.
